Portrait of Christian Volckman
Biography

Christian Volckman is a French filmmaker and visual artist working across cinema, animation, painting and emerging technologies.

His short film Maaz (1999) travelled to nearly 100 festivals and won over 100 awards. He went on to direct Renaissance (2006), a motion-capture noir voiced by Daniel Craig, Jonathan Pryce, Romola Garai and Ian Holm — released by Miramax, shortlisted for the Oscars, and awarded the Cristal for Best Feature at Annecy. In 2019 he wrote and directed The Room, a supernatural thriller starring Olga Kurylenko and Kevin Janssens, which won Best Film at Bucheon and the Audience Award at Strasbourg before becoming Shudder's most-watched original premiere of the year.

Since 2008 he has co-led the experimental duo CR with Raphaël Thierry, producing films, paintings and performances shown from Paris to Miami, alongside his own painting practice — dark, high-contrast canvases where the figure barely emerges from the matter. He has also directed music videos for artists including Zaz, Chinese Man and Johnny Hallyday.

He is currently developing The Kid: An Animated Adventure with Big Beach and FilmNation, the horror feature Lucid for Gaumont, and Elevation, a survival thriller set in the French mountains — while exploring AI-assisted image-making as a new extension of his visual language.
